When Changes Take Effect
Changes submitted by Wednesday at 5pm ET take effect for the next pay period. Changes after this deadline process the following pay period.
Federal vs State Withholding
Update both federal and state withholding separately. Some states use the federal W-4. Others require a state-specific form.
Additional Withholding
Request additional tax withholding if:
- You have other income (rental property, investments)
- Your spouse works
- You want a larger refund
Enter the additional amount per paycheck in the "Extra Withholding" field.
Claiming Exempt
You claim exempt from withholding only if:
- You had no federal tax liability last year AND
- You expect no federal tax liability this year
Most employees do not qualify for exempt status.
Checking Your Withholding
Review your pay stub to confirm withholding changes took effect. Federal and state taxes should reflect your new W-4 within 1-2 pay periods.
